Prices of existing homes -- which fell a record 3.5% last month -- will likely drop further through year£§s end, delivering the bitter medicine needed to restore the health of the housing market, the National Association of Realtors said Tuesday.
The median price fell in October for a third-consecutive month, to $221,000, as sellers were forced to cut prices. Those price drops, coupled with a dip in mortgage rates, seem to be reviving sales. Existing home sales ended a six-month losing streak in October, unexpectedly inching up 0.5%.
Prices still have further to fall, says David Lereah, the NAR£§s chief economist. But, he notes, the faster they fall, the faster the correction in the home market will end. "The correction is working, and sales are stabilizing," Lereah says. "That£§s good news for the economy."...More...
