Microsoft’s Letter to Yahoo
Talk about a Saturday night special. Microsoft said tonight that it is withdrawing its offer to buy Yahoo, one it had only recently raised.
In a lengthy letter to Jerry Yang, Yahoo’s chief executive, Microsoft chief Steven A. Ballmer said that the Internet company had made clear that it would not accept a deal on terms acceptable to Microsoft. The software giant had considered beginning a proxy fight, as it had threatened, but ultimately decided against it.

Franchising Rides Wave of Economic Expansion in Asia and Pacific Rim

If one works for a franchise system that either is franchising internationally or which is planning international franchise expansion, he undoubtedly has been evaluating opportunities and where to place the company’s development resources. Unless that person has been living under a rock, he must have considered, at least in passing, the attractions of the economically-talented Chinese and Indian markets, each with a population of more than one billion people. The Japanese economy has had its problems, but that it has embraced franchising since the 1970s. A franchise system may have considered franchising in Australia or New Zealand, countries with a language and legal system similar to that in the United States.
While everybody is talking about opportunities in the region, are any franchise companies able to go there and operate profitably? Do countries in the region have a pool of qualified prospective franchisees? Do enough people have the purchasing power needed to make a franchise program successful? Does anyone there really understand franchising? Can franchising operate under the laws of these different countries?

This mixture of raw materials determines the ceramic nature of tiles.
Ceramic materials are very ancient products, but they are still used today in the most advanced and modern applications.

Why choose the tiles?

How to combine techniques, style and aesthetic qualities
Choosing between the variety of materials used for wall and floor coverings is not easy. Designers and internal decorators, architects and consumers looking for residential solutions as much in line with the latest fashion trends as with ecological guidelines, are surrounded by an enormous range of technical and aesthetic offers.
A solution? A classification of finishing materials which helps to better understand not only the aesthetic aspects, but also performance and practicability.

Alternatives to tiles
Floor and wall covering materials can be classified according to specific criteria. A first criterion is based on the "nature" of the materials, corresponding to different technical and aesthetic characteristics. The shape, which is the second selection criterion, strongly influences the laying and application of the materials. Finally, structure and composition influence the materials' performance and behaviour.

The deal is the latest heavy investment by an international retailer in the country’s fast-growing consumer market. If Wal-Mart takes full control of

From Yangshan to the World
The white-carpeted, formal room where Chen Xuyuan speaks to visitors, on Xiao Yangshan island, is a busy place. Mr Chen, president of Shanghai International Port Group, plays host to a constant stream of dignitaries from elsewhere in China eager to see the container port Mr Chen'S company has built on the rocky island, linked to the mainland by a 32.5km bridge. It is one of the most audacious engineering feats even in a part of China which excels at them.
However, Mr Chen makes it clear that he wants to extend SIPG'S reputation and turn the company into an important international container terminal operator. The strategy came to wider attention last year, when SIPG unexpectedly took a 40 per cent stake in a new container terminal constructed by Danish-owned APM Terminals, part of the AP Moller-Maersk Group, at Zeebrugge in Belgium. The investment was the company抯 first outside China.
The Zeebrugge investment was the first step in pursuing the goal ?set for the company by the Shanghai municipal government, which owns 70 per cent of SIPG-of turning itself into a big international terminal operator. "If we want to become a global terminal operator, it's not enough," Mr Chen says of the Zeebrugge investment. "But the goal isn't something we'lll achieve in a short period of time."
SIPG's pursuit of international expansion will take it down the same route as three of the existing four biggest international container terminal operators --Hong Kong's Hutchison Ports, Singapore's PSA and Dubai's DP World. All started from a base in one of the world's busiest container ports and used them to build up reserves of finance and expertise which were used to buy or build assets elsewhere.
Two of the big operators -PSA and DP World -are owned by arms of their state. Mr Chen says he sees no immediate prospect of the municipal government's reducing its stake. The holder of the remaining 30 per cent is the listed China Merchants Group. Mr Chen accepts SIPG shares features with other big port operators. But it also has unique characteristics, especially its position as the port serving the lower Yangtze River, which passes through some of China抯 fastest-growing, most dynamic areas, he says....More...

Golden Bear introduces ceramic tiles made from waste
March 12, 2007—Golden Bear Ceramics, a subsidiary of Emgold Mining Corporation, is introducing stone tile manufactured from 100% waste material.
Golden Bear's stone building products, which include floor and wall tiles as well as roofing tiles, are manufactured using the Ceramext technology. Golden Bear has made significant advances in the technology in the past year, the company says, dramatically improving the quality and marketability of its products as well as building a successfully operating pilot scale plant. High quality polished floor tiles have been made for a showcase installation in Auburn, California as well as for display to potential distributors. The tiles were made with waste from a large aggregate producer in California. In addition Golden Bear has successfully produced tiles from other waste materials including fly ash, volcanic tuff, mine tailings and a wide range of other industrial wastes. These different materials have also been blended to create different colors and textures.
The increased roof reflectance results in lower interior temperatures and air conditioning demands placed on the electrical power grid. In 2008 it is expected that the State of California will introduce Title 24, a statewide initiative that will mandate the use of Cool Roof technology. Given that Golden Bear's roof tile is made from 100% waste material, its combination with Cool Roof technology enhances Golden Bear's potential as a supplier of 100% green roofing products. ...More...

About ceramic tiles
About Ceramic TileThis type of flooring is available in sizes anywhere from one square inch to eighteen square inches. The very small, one square inch size is great for very high traffic and moisture prone areas, like swimming pools. The largest tiles aren’t the best choice for high traffic areas, but they are very popular for creating a vast, open feel. Ceramic tile is also available in a huge variety of designs, textures, and colors. Ceramic tile is the most waterproof of all tile types. Ceramic tiles are thin and dense, and can be glazed, matte, embossed, textured, and anti slip.
Why Tile?Tile has a very nice hand crafted look, and is easy to care for. Tile is good for high traffic areas, especially entry ways. Tile can be laid in different patterns, allowing limitless creativity.
How is It Made?Ceramic tile is made from clay, and/or other minerals, and material is fired in a kiln. Then clay tiles are treated in one of two ways: glazed or unglazed. Glazed tile has color added to it after firing, and allows for brighter colors, and increased stain resistance. These tiles are usually used on walls and countertops, because they have a very slick and glassy surface. Unglazed tiles are sometimes referred to as quarry tiles. The pigment and color in these tiles is natural, and these tiles must be sealed for stain resistance.
When you visit a local home store or flooring store or outlet, you will see that there are endless possibilities when you choose ceramic tile. You can get ceramic tiles in nearly any color you desire, even designs that look just like natural stone!

Why All The Confusion Over Surface Types?
Why does this happen?
In some cases it is just because one stone type looks like another, but very different type. A good example is that many polished granites look like and are referred to as marble. A quick test is a drop of swimming pool (muriatic) acid to the underside of the stone. Limestone and marble will fizz, granite will not. See acid sensitivity link below.
Another issue is that each year, manufacturers have become increasingly better at producing products that look like something else. There are many more choices of color, texture, style, density, patterns, etc. Some clay products look like traditional concrete products (i.e. pavers). Some concrete products look like traditional clay products (i.e. concrete mexican tile). Some ceramic tile look like slate (i.e. "stone look" tile). ...More...

Choosing A Ceramic Tile - Walls & Floors
Ceramic Tile Selection
Selecting the proper type of ceramic tile for your project is probably the most important installation decision you will make. Here are some tips to help you in your purchase:
Ask for consistently sized tiles. Ceramic tile is fired in a kiln and then cooled at varying degrees of temperature and humidity. This expansion and contraction can cause the tiles to vary in size, sometimes by a 1/4" or more. Most ceramic tiles on the market will have some variation in size but accept nothing more than an 1/8" margin of difference. ...More...

Po River
Strolling Po River Bank――Po River
Selecting a bright sunny weekend to seek for inspiration is a joyful affair. I changed the steering wheel without hesitation toward to mother river – Po River. Po River brought 800 miles’ fecundity to Northern Italy and gestated the initial civilization of European continent. I think she will be my inspirational source.
From infancy, I always tenaciously believe that the most beautiful scene of Po River is the time when the setting sun slants. The night breeze swept the water surface and the overlapped ripples surged small waves on the river surface. How lively was! The horizontal setting sun could not be tolerant from loneliness and plunged into the river rapidly. However, it was blown by the mischievous wind and scattered into pieces, cheerfully danced on the river surface.
I reckon that if I can set one square meter of couch grass at the Po Riverside and spread out a warm and comfortable bed, then hang up that fine gauze. Everyday I mantle the dawn light and receive the kiss from the river wind, and view the sunset of water surface through white gauze.
Po River belongs to metal-glazed products with 3 different colors such as golden yellow, light yellow and blue. When the Po River is pasted under the sunlight, the golden light appears dazzle without splurge and elegance without indelicacy. Such an effect gives a feeling to people that they can stroll at the Po River bank and bath under the sunset light, inebriating by the natural scene....More...

Is Polished Concrete Slippery?
Kept clean and dry, polished concrete floors are generally no slicker than plain concrete surfaces. And they tend to be less slippery than waxed linoleum or polished marble. But public facilities that want to provide extra protection against slip-and-fall accidents can treat polished floors with anti-slip conditioners. These products contain special additives designed to improve traction and make wet surfaces safer. They must be reapplied periodically, but they can simply be mopped on during routine cleaning.

Maintaining the Shine
Although keeping polished concrete shiny requires minimal effort and expense, some regular care is necessary.
Demmert recommends a simple maintenance program of occasional dusting to remove grit and damp mopping with a neutral cleaner to enhance the shine. Some manufacturers sell special cleaners and conditioners for polished concrete that not only clean the surface, but also leave behind a dirt-resistant film. These products can be applied with a mop or auto scrubber and do not require buffing.
With basic cleaning, polished concrete should keep its luster for years. Eventually, though, the shine can dull, especially in high-traffic areas. Fortunately, it’s easy to restore the gleam. Sometimes simply buffing the floor with a commercial polishing compound will do the trick. If more touch-up is necessary, the floors can be lightly repolished with a fine-grit abrasive.

Applications for Polished Concrete
Because polishing is a multistep process, customers can choose the level of sheen-from satin to high-gloss-that meets their maintenance and aesthetic requirements. This versatility makes polished concrete an ideal flooring material for a variety of applications. Polishing contractors say their primary customers include:
* Large warehouses and warehouse outlets
* Retail stores
* Hotels and restaurants...More...

Can All Concrete Be Polished?
Almost any structurally sound concrete floor, whether new or old, can be polished. But there are some exceptions.
For new floors, no special mix design is required to achieve good results. However, the floor should be in place at least 28 days before polishing begins to ensure adequate curing. Some retail and warehouse facilities that plan to polish their floors after placement may specify the installation of as smooth a floor as possible to minimize the polishing steps required.
Existing floors typically require some surface preparation prior to polishing to remove dirt, grease, coatings, or blemishes. However, floors that are wavy, need extensive patching, or are extremely porous may not be good candidates for polishing. An experienced contractor can usually determine a floor’s suitability. ...More...

Wet vs. Dry Polishing
Contractors can polish concrete using wet or dry methods, but typically they use a combination of both.
The wet process uses water to cool the diamond abrasives and eliminate grinding dust. Because the water reduces friction and acts as a lubricant, it increases the life of the polishing abrasives, particularly the resin-bonded disks, which can melt at high temperatures. A disadvantage of the wet process is the mess. Crews must collect and dispose of the slurry that’s generated, which slows productivity.
Dry polishing requires no water. Instead, contractors use machines equipped with dust-containment systems that eliminate virtually all of the mess. Typically dry polishing is used for the initial grinding steps, when more concrete is being removed. As the surface becomes smoother, and crews switch from the metal-bonded to the finer resin-bonded diamond abrasives, they generally change to wet polishing. However, some manufacturers have introduced resin-bonded disks that are designed to withstand the friction of dry polishing, allowing the entire process to be done dry. ...More...

Standards for Polished Concrete
There are not published standards for polished concrete, but it is generally agreed that the concrete must be polished through the sequence of disks ending with 1800-3500 grit diamonds to be considered polished concrete. At this level the concrete will exhibit a glossy sheen and high reflectivity without the use of a topical coating.
Polished concrete in not simply exposing the rock in the concrete mix then applying a sealer.
Benefits of Polished Concrete ...More...

Polishing Basics
Simply put, polishing concrete is similar to sanding wood. Heavy-duty polishing machines equipped with progressively finer grits of diamond-impregnated segments or disks (akin to sandpaper) are used to gradually grind down surfaces to the desired degree of shine and smoothness.
The process begins with the use of coarse diamond segments bonded in a metallic matrix. These segments are coarse enough to remove minor pits, blemishes, stains, or light coatings from the floor in preparation for final smoothing. Depending on the condition of the concrete, this initial rough grinding is generally a three- to four-step process.
The next steps involve fine grinding of the concrete surface using diamond abrasives embedded in a plastic or resin matrix. Crews use ever-finer grits of polishing disks (a process called “lapping”) until the floor has the desired sheen. For an extremely high-gloss finish, a final grit of 1500 or finer may be used. Experienced polishing crews know when to switch to the next-finer grit by observing the floor surface and the amount of material being removed....More...

Artefact Catalog Codes - London Museum of Archaeology
In cataloging artefacts, various code schemes are frequently used for computer entry. While one of the early purposes of these, to minimize space in computer files, has been made redundant by cheap very large disk storage, the codes are still commonly used to expedite data entry for computer processing. The code scheme used by the London Museum of Archaeology has become something of a de facto standard being used by avocational archaeologists as well as consultants. As any move to greater standardization is a good thing, we present here with the kind permission of the London Museum of Archaeology, the most current version of the codes. Further as the London Museum of Archaeology is the natural spot for final disposition of any artefactual material from the London area, use of the museum's codes will facilitate encorporation to the existing collections.
The Museum's catalog system/code was initially conceived by Bill Finlayson for his research in the Crawford Lake area in the early 1970s, and formalized for the Museum's Draper site project in 1975. A full description of the system and procedures for cataloging is contained in an Appendix to Bill's Draper site report (The 1975 and 1978 Rescue Excavations at the Draper Site: Introduction and Settlement Patterns, National Museum of Man Mercury Series Paper 130, 1985) and this publication should be used as a reference. The code is very flexible and can easily be changed/modified to meet specific needs or characteristics of the site being cataloged.
While the codes are detailed below, the following file is made available in DBASE format and can be imported into most newer word processors or spreadsheets to be printed or used as you see fit.

Customs . . . Repositioning to Serve Effectively
By Yemi Akinsuyi, 12.18.2006
The Nigeria Customs Service, a Federal Government arm whose cardinal function is to collect import and export revenue as well as fighting smuggling and trade facilitation, plays a very important role in the economic drive of this nation. The Customs revenue has always been an effective device for government security and raising the living standards and quality of life of the citizens.
To meet the expectation of government and the general public therefore, the Nigeria Customs Service has in the last five years tried to reposition itself through the implementation of government reforms simplification and harmonisation of its procedures in line with international best practices as well as involvement of stakeholders in Customs matters and enlightenment of the general public. It is therefore, on the basis of these and the need to meet the challenges in the increasing world trade, that the SERVICOM Charter of the Service was recently formulated.
Despite the Customs primary purpose of excelling in the collection of and accounting for revenues, international trade facilitation and the protection of the Nigerian economy it has consistently ensured compliance with, and enforcement of government fiscal policies. The Nigeria Customs Service aims to achieve these through several activities such as simplifying valuation and declaration methods to the understanding of officers and men of the service, stakeholders and the general public. General ignorance on this has been identified as one of the factors that promote corrupt practices.

The Tiles & Architectural Ceramics Society (TACS)
Tiles are all around us for everyone to enjoy. Ceramic tiles cover walls and floors, roofs and pavements, furniture and stoves, and can be seen in churches and mosques, pubs and shops, hospitals and homes. They are often combined with other forms of ceramics such as terracotta, faience and mosaic. The Tiles & Architectural Ceramics Society is for anyone interested in tiles and decorative ceramics related to buildings.
Tiles have a history stretching back more than one thousand years. In the 13th and 14th centuries Europe’s churches were paved with decorated tiles. At the same time buildings in the Arab world were adorned with richly coloured tiles. Holland was an important centre for tiles in the 17th and 18th centuries and in the 19th century Britain pioneered mass-produced tiles. The 20th century has seen both a decline and a revival in tile-making. Tiles are now much collected and studied.
Since 1981 the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society has served as Britain’s national society responsible for the study and protection of tiles and architectural ceramics, uniting people with common interests. An international membership of individuals and institutions is drawn from the fields of museums, conservation, manufacturing (both industrial and craft) architecture, design, and antiques.
